Darndale:

Mark Nolan and Robbie O Connor are two keen anglers in the Dublin 17 area. They usually went fishing in the Darndale pond until one day they discovered an unwanted visitor. They noticed that thier fishing tackle was getting stuck and the fish life was declining with the effect of the weed. They approached Sphere 17 and in turn they contacted Dublin City Council. The weed was soon identified as Lagarosphion Major or Larry as the locals
call it! Larry is an invasive alien spiecies that outcompetes the flora and fauna of areas that it inhabits. The weed had become completely overgrown in the pond. The lads together with DCC and Sphere 17 put together an action plan to Reclaim the Pond. This involved months of planning, cleaning and treating the pond and more importantly educating the local community of the problem. The lads were then entered into the Young Environmetalist Award and have just recently recieved news that they have been shortlisted for the final stage of the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmatlist Awards (YEA) 2009. Bonnybrook ran three Self Defence workshops over the February mid term. The young people learned a range of self defence manouvres and seemed to enjoy the sessions!!
